Safety Management System Content

This page will include what elements should be considered when making a safety Management System.

The management system needs to have certain content – a number of well-defined management activity areas to reach the objectives - to really become a management system. Now, we don't have to re-invent many wheel here, we can just look around to see what others think about what should be in a management system. Whether that suits your organization is something that you need to decide together with your colleagues. The only advice I can give here is that you should be looking for activity areas that:

  • are required (by law or otherwise)
  • will be most effective to control risk
  • generate the most (visible) results to motivate people throughout the organization

For making your action plan - which is really what the management system is - it is important that you will be able to get results on a period no longer than 18 months. If it will be much longer it may turn people off.

One more advice: don’t start too big. Start with a lean system and a limited number of management activity areas and build it up based on experience and results. That way you end up with a system that addresses the needs and specific risk situation of your organization. But also don’t make it too small, because then you may not have the results you are looking for.

The content of a (safety) management system may include items obtained form references such as:

  • legislation
  • internations standards for industry / certification
  • industry examples/-practices
  • commercially available audit systems
